Fabric Care Guide

Regular Maintenance

Weekly Vacuuming

Use a soft brush attachment to vacuum fabric surfaces weekly. This removes dust, debris, and prevents soil from embedding deep into the fibers. Pay special attention to crevices and seams where dirt accumulates.

Cushion Care

Flip and rotate removable cushions regularly to ensure even wear and maintain their shape. Plump and reshape cushions weekly to prevent permanent indentations.

Positioning

Keep fabric furniture away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and UV damage. Maintain adequate ventilation around furniture to prevent moisture buildup and odors.

Cleaning Spills & Stains

Act Quickly

Blot spills immediately with a clean, white cloth or paper towel. Work from the outside of the stain toward the center to prevent spreading. Never rub or scrub, as this can damage fibers and push the stain deeper.

Water-Based Stains

For most liquid spills, blot first, then dab with a clean damp cloth. Use small amounts of water to avoid over-wetting the fabric. Allow to air dry completely and vacuum once dry to restore texture.

Stubborn Stains

For persistent stains, use a mild fabric cleaner specifically designed for upholstery. Always test cleaning products on an inconspicuous area first. Apply cleaner to a cloth, not directly to the fabric, and work gently from outside to center.

Fabric Types

Natural Fibers

Cotton, linen, and wool require gentle care. Use minimal moisture and allow thorough drying to prevent shrinkage or water marks.

Synthetic Blends

Polyester and microfiber blends are generally more stain-resistant but still require prompt attention to spills and regular cleaning.

Performance Fabrics

Crypton and similar performance fabrics offer enhanced stain resistance but still benefit from regular maintenance and proper cleaning techniques.

Professional Care

Deep Cleaning

Schedule professional upholstery cleaning every 12-18 months, or more frequently for high-use pieces. Professional cleaning removes deep-set dirt and refreshes the fabric.

Stain Treatment

For valuable pieces or difficult stains (wine, oil, ink), consider professional cleaning to avoid permanent damage from improper home treatment.

What to Avoid

Harmful Cleaning Products

Never use bleach, harsh detergents, or solvent-based cleaners unless specifically recommended for your fabric type. These can cause discoloration, fiber damage, or fabric deterioration.

Excessive Moisture

Avoid over-wetting fabric as this can cause water stains, shrinkage, or mold growth. Always use minimal moisture and ensure thorough drying.

Heat Sources

Keep fabric furniture away from radiators, fireplaces, and heating vents. Excessive heat can cause fading, shrinkage, and fiber damage.

Sharp Objects

Protect fabric from pet claws, jewelry, and sharp objects that can snag or tear delicate fibers. Address any loose threads immediately by cutting (never pulling) them close to the surface.
